Charlie, from the pictures, you might have some variant of cellulitis, which is an infection of the skin. IV Cephalexin (also known as Keflex) and Cipro are both commonly prescribed for that indication. Keflex will target strep and non-methicillin staph infections, while Cipro is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Until you get the actual strain cultured, what they\'re used to do is try to knock out the most common bacterial strains in urinary tract infections and balanitis. If you\'re diabetic or insulin-resistant, that increases the risks. Fungal infections are also a possibility, but a very remote one. Cellulitis can take up to several weeks to resolve, so as long as things aren\'t getting worse, don\'t panic. Do NOT apply DMSO in the meantime--your primary concern is to make sure that the infection has resolved.
From what I\'ve read so far, a possible triggering risk could have been your bike riding. The thing about bacteria, even the really bad strains like MRSA is that we\'re already crawling with them. It can take a skin abrasion, or some chafing to break the skin enough to let something in. But I\'m a bit premature here. You need results from a set of labs and a follow-up consult from your doctor. Not sure if a urologist would be able to make much sense if it does end up to be a PMMA issue, since that would be a rare case. If you\'re able, you might want to follow-up with an infectious diseases specialist.
In the meantime, I would keep note of where the redness and swelling has reached. If it spreads past existing borders, you need urgent medical attention. If your body temp increases and you feel feverish, you need to get to an emergency room. Usually, when we talk about treating cellulitis, it\'s usually of a limb, like a leg or foot. The advice is there is to elevate to lower the swelling, but I\'m not sure what the analogous advice is for a penile case. If it doesn\'t hurt, I would maybe suggest gentile compression with sterile dressing, but I\'d cross check it with your doctor.
Here\'s a case report in PubMed regarding penile cellulitis. If you can\'t access it to some medical journal subscription lockout, let me know and I can post it.
